Joe Root Should Not Have Been Made The Captain, Feel Graeme Swann

England skipper Joe Root has come under the scanner after failing to regain the Ashes urn losing to Australia in Manchester. The Aussies inflicted their second defeat in four Tests which has raised former cricketers question Root’s leadership qualities. And now former spinner Graeme Swann has said that it was not right to hand Root the captaincy at the first place.

Australia retained the Ashes urn after beating England by 185 runs in the fourth Test at the Old Trafford. Steve Smith once again made the difference between the two sides scoring a double century and a fifty to walk away with the man of the match award.

Joe Root has looked out of ideas to get the better of Smith. He has time and again looked clueless out on the field and has also struggled to lead the team from the front. Barring one or two occasions, Root has not been among the runs which have also hurt England badly.

Graeme Swann believes any decision now to remove the captaincy from Root would be “bonkers”. Instead, he questioned the call to appoint him to the position back in 2017. The former cricketer said that Root tries to be someone who he is not which has affected his game.

“I don’t think he should’ve been made captain in the first place because I think it blunted his batting and I was worried it would do that,” Swann told Standard Sport. “He tries to be a person who he’s not naturally, being sensible and restrained. I think he’s a larrikin and a cheeky-younger-brother type of character – and that’s how he bats best. I’d like to see that again,” he added.

Under Joe Root, England have played 32 Tests so far in which they have won 16 and lost 13 Tests. They have sustained defeats against South Africa and West Indies at home. While Root himself has insisted to carry on with the job, it will be interesting to see what the new crop of support staffs decides.
