Irfan Pathan Credits Test Cricket For Jasprit Bumrah’s Massive Strides

Jasprit Bumrah

When Jasprit Bumrah came into the International arena, he was deemed as a limited-overs specialist. Bumrah had achieved great success in List A cricket but his records in First-Class cricket was not extraordinary. Subsequently, when Bumrah was given his maiden chance in the red ball version on the tour of South Africa, there were some eyebrows raised.

However, Bumrah once again let his bowling do all the talking for him. The Gujarat pacer was up and ready and he was able to grab his opportunity with both hands. He was prepared for the big stage and he didn’t disappoint. Consequently, it has been a dream start for the talismanic fast bowler as he has picked 62 wickets in 12 Test matches. He has bowled with an immaculate average of 19.24 and he is going to get even better.

Bumrah is breathing fire.

In fact, Bumrah has achieved the highest ranking of three and he is only 12 Test matches old. Indian pacer Irfan Pathan explained how Test cricket has helped Bumrah in pulling up the socks.

“He has developed the away swinger while playing international cricket. And now he bowls it with greater control. That’s thanks to Test cricket. When you play Test cricket, you are exposed to the challenge of bowling in different situations – with the new ball, in the second session with the old ball, again with different balls in the final session.

Bumrah has scalped five five-wicket hauls and he breathing down the neck of the best batsmen in the game. The right-arm gun pacer keeps getting better with every match.

Test cricket has taught control to Bumrah – Pathan.

“It comes down to at least three to four spells in a day. That’s how you learn so much about yourself. Yes, you have coaches to guide you but as a bowler, you learn to use your own brain. That’s what we see with Bumrah,” Irfan told India Today.

Irfan Pathan revealed that Bumrah has made a slight change in his delivery stride. Bumrah is more upright now as likened with the time he started his International career. Thus, the linchpin pacer is making the right noise at the top level.

“Earlier when he first came into international cricket, he used to fall a little to the left side. Now he is more upright, so he is in better balance. That’s how he has been able to move the ball both ways. That’s his biggest strength as well. The other good thing is his action hasn’t changed at all. When your action is repeated again and again, you become a master of your art,” he says.

Bumrah also joined Irfan Pathan in elite company when he scalped a Test hat-trick in the recently concluded series against West Indies. Pathan stated that Bumrah is the best bowler in the world and the Indian team is lucky to have a lethal bowler like him.

“He is someone who bowls with the old ball, new ball, white ball, red ball, against set batsman or the new one with the same sharpness. We are very lucky to have this kind of bowler in our ranks. He makes the bowling unit look that much better,” Irfan said.

Bumrah will like to continue his good show in the upcoming series against South Africa. This would be the first time when he will play a Test match in home conditions. However, Bumrah is not part of the T20I side as he has been rested.
