Aakash Chopra Takes Subtle Dig At Royal Challengers Bangalore After They Rope In Hesson, Katich
Former India opener Aakash Chopra seems to have taken a subtle dig at Royal Challengers Bangalore’s latest decision to shake-up their backroom staff. In a desperate attempt to improve their fortunes in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Royal Challengers have roped in former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson and former Kolkata Knight Riders assistant coach Simon Katich.
In the major overhaul, Hesson has been appointed the director of cricket while Katich as head coach. In order to make room for Hesson and Katich, the franchise parted ways with Gary Kirsten and Ashish Nehra, the batting and bowling coach respectively.
Both Nehra and Kirsten were part of the leadership group along with captain Virat Kohli after Daniel Vettori was sacked as the head coach following the end of the 2018 season. However, the move did not pay any dividends as the team ended up at the bottom spot in 2019 too.

According to Sanjeev Churiwala, the Royal Challengers chairman, the move to switch to a single-coach model became necessary because the franchise wanted to achieve “high performance”.
“RCB’s purpose is to be the most trusted, respected and best-performing T20 franchise and hence our constant endeavour is to create a culture of excellence and high performance for every member of the team,” he said in a media statement.
Only time will tell how successful the decision turns out to be. But for the time being, Askash Chopra does not impressed with the same. The former opener took to Twitter to coaches are not the problem for the team’s woeful performance over the years. While Aakash Chopra did not openly state his opinion but in an apparent dig, he tweeted:
“If constantly changing support staff hasn’t changed the fortunes of the team, it’s time to admit that, perhaps, the problem lies elsewhere.”
