Sourav Ganguly Backs Shreyas Iyer To Bat At Number Four

Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly has backed Shreyas Iyer to bat at the troublesome position of number four. India has had its perennial issues of number four batsman and the think tank recently backed Rishabh Pant to bat at the same position. However, the southpaw batsman was not able to deliver the goods.

On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer scored 136 runs in the two innings he played against West Indies in the ODI series. Iyer scored his runs at an impressive average of 68 and strike rate of 124.77 and many believe that the Mumbai batsman should be batting one position higher in the batting order. Thus, Iyer has shown the promise to be the future of Indian cricket.

Iyer is the right man to bat at four.

On the other hand, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar had also spoken on the same lines as he believes that Iyer is the answer to India’s number four woes.

“The quality is hugely noticeable and hopefully, as he will watch his champion captain more, he will start converting those good knocks into hundreds. He should ideally bat at No.4”.

“He must understand that it is a position which the greats have made their own with big performances and that is what the Indian public will start expecting from him,” Ganguly added.

Meanwhile, Sourav Ganguly has observed Shreyas Iyer from the close corners in the Delhi Capitals. Iyer had also led with aplomb and had scored more than 400 runs for the franchise.

On the other hand, Virat Kohli scored his 43rd One Day International hundred in the third ODI against West Indies. The Prince of Kolkata believes that the Indian captain will leave everyone behind.

“I stayed up till 3 AM watching him get those hundreds and that sums up his world-class stature, which is getting better every day. I have a strong feeling that he will leave everyone behind,” Ganguly wrote.

India will begin their Test championship against West Indies with the first Test to be played from 22nd August.
