Head Coach Should Have Some Kind Of Say In Selection Of Support Staff: Zaheer Khan
Former India pacer Zaheer Khan has opined that the head coach should have a say in the selection of his support staff. Recently, BCCI advertised for the post of various positions and this time around, the head coach won’t be having any in the appointment of other coaches.

“He should have some kind of say in the whole process, for sure because for any coach it’s important to have the support system around him which is in line with his thought process. If you have people going in different directions on that platform that it’s gonna have deprecations filtering down to the team and you don’t want that. So it has to be working together as a team and if team goes in different directions, it never really helps. So some kind of a say is important that a coach should have because he is captain of that ship,” Zaheer told Cricbuzz.
In 2017, when Ravi Shastri took over as the head coach, no advertisement was put out for any coaching position – barring his. Bharat Arun was again appointed as the bowling coach of Indian cricket team while Sanjay Bangar and R Sridhar continued to perform their job.
However, the BCCI changed norms this time and also advertised for the post of batting coach, fielding coach, bowling coach and other posts. The head coach will be confirmed before the board will take a call on other posts but it is confirmed that the head coach will not have any say in the appointment of his support staff, that will be happening for the first time.
For now, it is almost confirmed that Shastri will continue to be team India’s head coach, especially after the backing of Virat Kohli. Bharat Arun, the bowling coach, also looks set to continue his job as he has created a great pool of pacers and has made India one of the best bowling units across formats.

As per various reports, Sanjay Bangar could be replaced as the batting coach – he was elevated to the post of assistant coach in 2017. The prime reason behind it is the inability to find a number four batsman for the World Cup.
R Sridhar, the present fielding coach, also has a strong chance to keep his spot but with Jonty Rhodes throwing his hat in the ring, the race has become interesting and the former South African player will give a tough contest to Sridhar.
A call on the head coach will be taken on August 16, when CAC members Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy meet at BCCI office in Mumbai. A call on the support staff will be taken by MSK Prasad-led selection committee. This process might be conducted next week.
Shastri, Tom Moody, Mike Hesson, Phil Simmons, Lalchand Rajput and Robin Singh are six candidates who will be interviewed for the head coach job.
