”On This Day” Sachin Tendulkar Scored His Maiden Century In International Cricket
Turning the clock back to 1990, on this day, the 17-year-old kid Sachin Tendulkar scored a stunning century to start his count of centuries in the International Cricket. It was a special century, as it came against England team in their own soil one day prior to the Independence Day.
Playing against England (in England) at the age of 17 years and 112 days, the cricketing legend struck his maiden ton at Old Trafford, Manchester. The knock made him only the third-youngest player to score a hundred in a Test.
Sachin, who made his debut at the age of 16 against Pakistan in 1989 went on to pile 100 International centuries in his sparkling career span of 24 years. The knock saved the match but eventually, India lost the series 1-0. However, the knock showed that Sachin was there to stay.
Sachin Tendulkar scored 119*:
Batting first, England posted 519 on the board with Graham Gooch, Michael Atherton and Robin Smith scoring hundreds. In reply, India managed to post 432 with skipper Mohammad Azharuddin leading the charge with a patient 179. He was ably supported by 17-year-old Tendulkar who scored 68.
Allan Lamb ‘s century in England’s second innings helped the hosts put up 320 runs, and India was battling to save the match when Dilip Vengsarkar was sent back by Christopher Lewis, in stepped a young Tendulkar.
His skipper soon departed, but Tendulkar battled on in the harsh English conditions. Tendulkar batted 225 minutes and managed to save the Test match with his unbeaten century (119*) helping India draw the match with the score at 343/6.
The flamboyant cricketer went on to become the god of cricket. Sachin Tendulkar played 200 Tests for India in which he pummeled 15921 runs averaging 53.78. He played in 463 ODIs for India and stacked 18426 runs averaging 44.83. His international runs still stand as the most by any cricketer. Sachin is also the owner of 100 international centuries.
