ICC World Cup 2019: Kane Williamson Surpasses Mahela Jayawardene’s Record

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has surpassed the record of former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene. Williamson overtook Jayawardene’s record of most runs as captain in a single edition of the World Cup. Williamson and Jayawardene had the same runs (548) before the ongoing final between England and New Zealand.

Williamson scored 30 runs in the final to finish the tournament with 578 runs at an average of 82.57 and strike rate of 74.57. Thus, Williamson now has the most runs as a captain in the World Cup edition. On the other hand, Mahela Jayawardene had scored 548 runs in the 2007 edition of the World Cup as the captain of the Sri Lankan side. Jayawardene had led Sri Lanka to the final of the World Cup in 2007.

Williamson has been super consistent.

Meanwhile, Ricky Ponting who led Australia to glory in 2003 had scored 539 runs in the same year in the World Cup. Furthermore, Ponting had scored a blistering hundred in the final of the World Cup in 2003 against India.

Australia’s current captain Aaron Finch scored 507 runs in this edition of the World Cup at an average of 50.7 and strike rate of 102.01. Moreover, South Africa’s former skipper AB de Villiers scored 482 runs in the 2015 World Cup edition.

Meanwhile, Kane Williamson scored two centuries and as many fifties in the World Cup. Williamson is one of the most consistent batsmen in the World and he was able to deliver the goods at the big stage forthe Kiwis.

Williamson had scored a fine hundred against West Indies and South Africa. Furthermore, he was able to take his team over the line against the Proteas in a tight match which went down to the wire.

Meanwhile, the final of the World Cup is going on between England and New Zealand. The Blackcaps have scored 141 in 33 overs after electing to bat first. Henry Nicholls scored a fine fifty whereas Plunkett has taken two wickets.
