Meanwhile, England produced a thorough effort at Edgbaston to rout five-time World champions out of the World Cup. The host restricted Australia to 223 runs to chase down the target in just 32.1 overs to keep their hopes alive for the first World Cup trophy. Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer ran over the Aussies top-order to have them at 14 for three removing the in-form openers – David Warner and Aaron Finch. Since then, Steven Smith and Alex Carey staged a 103-run stand to revive the innings before Carey’s vigil came to an end.

But Smith carried on with his knock to add another fifty to his tally ad partnered well with Mitchell Starc to post 223 runs before Adil Rashid and Chris Woakes cleaned off with three wickets each. England openers – Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow once again gave an excellent start to add 124 runs for the first wicket to set the stage for the chase. Bairstow, who looked a bit out of touch was the first to get out leading to the controversial dismissal of Roy.

Jason Roy tried to pull a short delivery from Pat Cummins and missed everything but Kumar Dharmasena adjudged him out taking some time after Australian players appealed in unison. Roy looked livid with the decision as he walked back in anger after having a heated discussion with the on-field umpires. However, the wicket didn’t cause much of a problem as Joe Root, and Eoin Morgan took England over the target convincingly.

Meanwhile, ICC found Jason Roy guilty of breaching article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel after showing dissent to the umpire. The apex body fined 30 percent of his match fees and gave him two demerit points. The cricketer accepted the sanction and thus, no formal hearing was needed. Much to the joy of the England team, the in-form opener will be available for Sunday’s mega final against New Zealand.
