Matt Henry and Trent Boult were lethal with the new ball, blowing away India’s top half to leave them at five for three and then 24 for four getting the wicket of Dinesh Karthik. At that point, a huge win seemed likely but India did fight gradually. First through Rishabh Pant-Hardik Pandya and then through a fantastic Ravindra Jadeja-MS Dhoni partnership. Jadeja in particular, played arguably his best ODI knock to get India really deep, with the experienced Dhoni at the other end. Things got really close but Jadeja’s dismissal got New Zealand in front and then Martin Guptill produced a moment of brilliance getting Dhoni which was the final nail in the coffin.

Previously, Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson played two invaluable knocks to post a challenging total on the scoreboard. Williamson stitched two crucial partnerships with Henry Nicholls and then Taylor to post 211 in 46.1 runs before rain played a spoilsport at Manchester. Meanwhile, New Zealand assessed the conditions in the morning and preferred mostly on the ones and twos to post 239 runs on the board which proved too much for India ending 18 runs on short.
Soon after India’s defeat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his support to Virat Kohli & Co. He lauded India’s fighting spirit for taking the game deep. Modi also wished best wishes for the future endeavours in as India play West Indies next across formats.
