Hampshire Ropes In Ajinkya Rahane as Aiden Markram’s Replacement
Hampshire have roped in Indian National Cricket team vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane as a replacement for Aiden Markram for the middle part of the English season, the club confirmed on April 25 (Thursday). Rahane will play eight County Championship matches in the month of May, June and the beginning of July.
Meanwhile, as per reports, BCCI were looking to send their seven Tests cricketers to play in the County to prepare for the series against Windies just after the ICC World Cup. With Ajinkya Rahane not in the World Cup squad, he sought permission from BCCI to play County Cricket. After BCCI’s clearance, Rahane becomes the first Indian player to feature for Hampshire. It will be an outstanding opportunity for the middle-order to keep himself match fit ahead of the Windies tour.
Excited to play for Hampshire
Ajinkya Rahane will slot in place of Aiden Markram who will return after the Royal London One-Day Cup to link with South Africa ahead of the ICC World Cup. Rahane who is currently playing for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL seemed excited to be the first Indian player to join Hampshire. He thanked BCCI for giving him the NOC and expects to score runs and win games for his team.
“I am excited to be the first Indian to play for Hampshire, a county which has a glowing reputation,” Rahane said. “I hope to score runs and win as a team and would like to thank BCCI for allowing me to play,” he added.
Giles White, Hampshire’s Director of Cricket, said that they are happy to have Ajinkya Rahane in the team. Rahane will join a strong pool of batsmen consisting of James Vince, Rilee Rossouw and Sam Northeast. Meanwhile, the experienced middle-order batsman has a good record in Hampshire’s Ageas Bowl scoring three half-centuries in four innings. He also has an ODI fifty in this ground and only look to strengthen his record.
Hampshire has had mixed start to their County Championship this season. They started thier campaign with an innings win over Essex but then suffered a defeat at the hands of Yorkshire by a similar margin.
