ICC World Cup: Sandeep Lamichhane Calls For a 14-16 Teams Event
The bells have already started to ring for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019 in England and Wales from May 30. The 12th edition of the quadrennial tournament will see ten teams fighting it out for the prestigious trophy. However, Sandeep Lamichhane, the star leg-spinner from Nepal has opined that the marquee event should be a 14-16 team affair; otherwise, players like him won’t be able to achieve their dreams.
Meanwhile, there have been wide-ranging debates for increasing the number of participating teams in the ICC World Cup. But, the International Cricket Council is yet to take a final call on that, and the next tournament in 2023 will also be a ten-team event. Sandeep Lamichhane, who became the first Nepalese cricketer to bag an Indian Premier League deal with the Delhi Capitals – previously known as Delhi Daredevil, expressed his sadness on missing the tournament in England and Wales.
Lamichhane drops a huge comment on the format of World Cup
The young leg-spinner called for 14-16 team competition so that the emerging nations can also be a part of it. He also added that with 2023 a ten-team tournament, they need to wait for a while before living their playing of representing their county in the showpiece event.
“Sorry to say but a 10-team World Cup will hurt a lot of players like me who will not be a part of it,” the Delhi Capitals player told AFP in an interview. “I think there should be 14-16 teams in the World Cup.
“World Cup comes after every four years and teams can achieve their biggest dreams there. We are an emerging nation and this is something we would love to play for our country. Even in 2023, there are (again) only 10 teams so it will be a while before we can even think of playing in the 50-over event,” he added.
In conclusion, Sandeep Lamichhane, who will be watching the ICC World Cup from miles away, hopes that small teams like Afghanistan cause some major upsets in the tournament. The 18-year-old leg-spinner has represented Delhi Capitals in four games picking five wickets and will expect to repay the trust shown by the management on him.
With still a few games left, Lamicchane will look to make a good mark with his impressive variations and contribute to the success of the team.
