IPL 2019: It will be Interesting to See How Players Respond to this Defeat – Stephen Fleming
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered their second loss of the season when they went down against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by six wickets at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. The absence of MS Dhoni – down with a back spasm turned out to be detrimental for the defending champions. Following their loss, Chennai coach Stephen Fleming said that it would be interesting to see how his players react to the defeat.
Batting first, Chennai Super Kings could only manage 132 runs after a 79-run opening stand. Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis got off to a solid start as they tore apart the new ball bowlers. But once Shahbaz Nadeem got the better of Watson, it was a down slider for the visiting team. They lost five wickets for just 22 runs with Rashid Khan picking two of them before Ambati Raydu, and Ravindra Jadeja’s 31-run partnership helped them post 132 runs.
While many thought that the wicket will get slower, but it eased out and became a batting paradise. Jonny Bairstow and David Warner once again continued their routine of putting a 50+ opening partnership in just four overs. Warner completed his half-century before getting out to simplify the life of the batsmen to follow. Sunrisers Hyderabad lost three more wickets, but Bairstow held things from one end to bag a crucial two points for his team.
Will work together to repair the flaws
Chennai Super Kings suffered only their second defeat, and their head coach Stephen Fleming said that this is the first time in a while an opponent team have left them in splits. He also added that it will be interesting to see how they respond and stated that they will work together to come out stronger.
The former Kiwi skipper also added that they don’t over-assess their losses and will focus on the areas which need extra attention.
“This is the first time in a while we were exposed like that and will be interesting to see how the players respond,” Fleming said at the post-match press conference.
“We don’t over-analyse our defeats. We identify the areas to work on and we work on those. You have to have some kind of resilience. We played eight and won seven and the ninth one we got to keep motivated,” he explained.
In conclusion, Stephen Fleming added they wouldn’t change their training procedure and admitted that one need to expect these kinds of defeats in these long tournaments.
