The Detroit Lions have employed Darrell Bevell as their new offensive coordinator.
Bevell replaces Jim Bob Cooter, whose contract was not renewed by the crew earlier this month. The Lions ranked 23rd in dashing yards per recreation (103.eight), 20th in passing yards per recreation (223.5) and 24th in factors per recreation (19.38) this previous season.
Bevell was offensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks from 2011 to ’17. He was fired by Seattle after the 2017 season.

Bevell helped the Seahawks attain two Tremendous Bowls — together with a win towards the Denver Broncos in Tremendous Bowl XLVIII. However the 49-year-old is probably greatest recognized for calling a cross play on the objective line in Tremendous Bowl XLIX towards the New England Patriots. Malcolm Butler intercepted it, securing a win for the Patriots, whose protection on the time was coached by Matt Patricia, the Lions’ present head coach.
The cross play was largely criticized as a result of the Seahawks had Marshawn Lynch, one of many recreation’s greatest short-yardage rushers. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll took all of the blame for the decision for following the loss.
Throughout Bevell’s time in Seattle, the Seahawks averaged 131.9 yards dashing, 216 yards passing and 23.99 factors per recreation. Most of this was performed with Lynch at operating again and Russell Wilson at quarterback.
When the Lions set out on an offensive coordinator search, basic supervisor Bob Quinn mentioned it might be largely Patricia’s rent. Patricia, coming off a 6-10 season in his first 12 months, has appeared to favor a ball-control offense with a robust dashing recreation — the sort Bevell ran with the Seahawks.
Quinn mentioned in his season-ending information convention that greater than something, Detroit needed a coordinator who may adapt his offense by the week.
“We would like to give you the option to run the ball, we would like to give you the option to use our quarterback as a result of he has a ton of expertise. So we would like to be various,” Quinn mentioned. “We’re not going to sit there and be in 4 large receivers, shotgun each play and throw it 45 instances. That is not good for anyone. Then again, we’re not going to be three tight ends and run the ball 40 instances.
“We’d like to do a greater job of going into every week wanting on the opponent and say, ‘How are we going to beat this crew?’ If they’ve an important run protection and a poor cross protection, perhaps we throw it 45 instances and vice versa. So, we would like somebody that thinks that method. That thinks that, ‘Hey, I’ve an offense, however my offense is adaptable. I can change week-to-week, or I can change from this week I’ve this set of receivers, and two weeks later I do not.’
Prior to his time in Seattle, Bevell was the Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator for 5 years.
Whereas there, the Vikings averaged 133.2 dashing yards and 201 passing yards per recreation.
Bevell performed quarterback at Wisconsin, the place he was a four-year starter, and overlapped with Quinn at Connecticut, when Bevell was the Huskies’ large receivers coach in 1998-99 and Quinn was a graduate assistant inside the soccer program.
