Washington Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby left Saturday evening’s 2-1 time beyond regulation loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets after taking a stick to the face.

The stick of Cam Atkinson slid by the goalie masks as Holtby raised it to put together to deflect a possible shot, and the stick appeared to make contact with Holtby close to his eyes.

Holtby was handled on the bench earlier than heading to the locker room. The Capitals introduced throughout the second intermission that he wouldn’t return to the sport.

Pheonix Copley changed Holtby in internet and made 10 saves earlier than permitting a power-play objective to Artemi Panarin at three:30 of the time beyond regulation interval.

Atkinson, who scored earlier within the sport, obtained a two-minute penalty for high sticking.
